Cell refurbishment for central London Police Station

The Metropolitan Police commissioned cell refurbishment works for this Central London police station, to comply with appropriate police custody expectations and design standards . The Project Manager was responsible for cost consultancy and overseeing the works from inception to completion, with refurbishment works including plumbing and new sanitary ware installation, as well as decorations. Given the safety-critical nature of custody facilities, the refurbishment required high levels of vandal resistance, anti-graffiti wall coatings as part of the redecoration , and to allow for effective hygiene and sanitation maintenance. From navigating additional security measures for site access to working with pre-approved products specifically designed for custodial environments, the Project Manager’s experience in managing projects with high security and specialists needs was key to the success of the project.

Asset & Investment Management post-transfer programme, £193million

Following their stock transfer, this registered provider needed support to manage their asset and investment programme. As an advanced user of asset management software, including Codeman, Keystone and Promaster, the Project Manager assigned to this project programmed £193million worth of refurbishment works over a 5 year period, with responsibility for cash flow forecasting and overseeing onsite costs with internal Project Managers.

Ward & Operating Theatre refurbishment project, £¾million

For this complex and challenging project with a £¾million budget, the Project Manager was responsible for the administration of the contract and cost consultancy. The project to deliver complete refurbishment was operationally extremely challenging due to the hospital being occupied and fully functioning 24 hours per day during the works. Using their unparalleled project experience, the assigned Project Manager successfully delivered the project in line with the approved budget, and with a quick turnaround for minimal disruption to patients and hospital staff.

Building Schools Programme, £200million

Northamptonshire County Council, before they became two unitary authorities in 2021, commissioned project management services for their £200million Building Schools Programme. One of the biggest education projects in British history, the Project Manager assigned to this mammoth project was responsible for surveying and costing 42 schools, and acting as project lead for the life cycle of the project.

Capital Works Programme, £125million

Leading a team of Project Managers, Surveyors, Clerk of Works, and Resident Liaison Officers, the Project Manager assigned to this £125million was responsible for the complete programme delivery, including sub-projects such as roofing replacement, window renewal, external refurbishment and internal remodelling. Programme delivery encompassed detailed reports for Board-level funding approval, chairing high-profile meetings, specifications and technical briefs, and the end to end process for design drawings, planning consent, and building regulations, including navigating the complexity of listed buildings within the stock portfolio. Overcoming each obstacle methodically and steering the project team to the ambitious end-vision, the project was delivered successfully.

Window renewal in conservation area, Oxford Circus

This project was for a window replacement programme in a 6-storey hotel building in the heart of Oxford Circus, a location designated as conservation area by Westminster City Council. The beautiful, historic building needed its windows upgraded, and moving from single glazed to double glazed required planning permission. This project called for dual services, in both project management and planning consultancy. The Project Manager assigned to this secured planning permission, and oversaw the project through to total completion. From planning drawings and designs, through to the consent process, to installation and completion of the programme, this was another successful project.

Anil Rana, Mentee & Mentor

Every mentoring story is inspirational, but Anil’s is particularly inspiring because he went onto become a mentor himself and would later win the prestigious RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Award for the Mentor category in 2016. Rare mentor, Raymond, mentored Anil for many years, supporting his journey from when he recruited Anil as an Assistant Surveyor, through to seeing him achieve a First Class Honours Degree in Building Surveying at Southbank University, through to going onto get Chartered. Raymond's philosophy has always been to share knowledge and wisdom, which he considers to be an ethical duty as an experienced Chartered Surveyor. He helped Anil unleash his potential onto the sector through professional mentoring, and he has gone onto have a blazing career, including being recognised as the youngest FRICS in Africa and being an award-winning, global success in the RICS community. Anil wanted to pay it forward, and has gone onto mentor himself. To date, he has helped an impressive 130+ people get chartered, across 16 countries and 5 continents. We proudly use Anil’s story as a case study for our Rare mentor, Raymond, and as a testament to the power of mentoring.

Carlene, Mentee

Carlene was mentored by her mentor, Claire, who was s a volunteer sponsor of the prestigious G15 Accelerate programme. The G15 Accelerate is a high calibre Chartered Management Institute leadership development programme introduced in 2020 as part of the G15 Diversity Pledge, and exclusively for people from ethnic minority (global ethnic majority) groups working in the housing sector.

Carlene and Claire were matched, and they engaged in a fulfilling mentoring journey for around 18 months. Carlene passed the course with flying colours, and her feedback reflected the value of professional mentoring and how much she took from it.

Emma and Charlotte, Co-Founders of Acacia Coaching & Development, had worked with Claire in the housing sector and asked her to deliver around 6-8 mentoring sessions as part of their Emerging Talent programme for a Surrey-based Housing Association.

Designed to support and empower the next generation of managers and leaders, Claire was matched with an aspiring manager, who was accessing mentoring to help prepare for their next step. The mentoring was one part of the wider talent programme, and between professional mentoring and the course delivery, Claire's mentee later went onto become a manager in her Housing Association, and fulfilled her ambition to move into her first management role.
